Introduction

Bible Quest is a real-world exploration experience: you walk to genuine places, unlock Scripture and collect Heritage Cards. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how long we keep it and how you can remove it.

It applies to the Bible Quest application and the biblequest.world website. By using Bible Quest you agree to the handling of information described here.

02

Information We Collect

  • Account information you provide when you create an explorer account.
  • Location information while you explore, and specific coordinates attached to certain progress records.
  • Journey and discovery progress, including XP, achievements, Heritage Cards, reflections and saved verses.
  • Community content you choose to publish, and your follow, reaction and comment activity.
  • A profile photo, if you upload one.
  • Daily step and walking-distance totals, if you turn step tracking on.
  • A push notification registration for each device where you turn notifications on.
  • Basic device and technical information needed to run the app.
03

Account Information

We store your email address, an encrypted password (handled by our authentication provider — we never see the plain password), your explorer name and, if you create one, your public Community username, display name, bio and country.

Your email address is never shown to other explorers.

04

Location Information

Bible Quest requests location permission from your device only when you use exploration features. Your continuous position stream is read and processed on your device: the map, walking navigation, the Path of Light, arrival detection and distance calculations all run locally, and that stream is never uploaded or logged to our servers.

To find the discoveries around you — including for nearby notifications — your device sends an approximate position to our servers to run the search. It is rounded before it is sent, used only to answer that request, and is not written to any database or activity log.

Some coordinates are stored, because a discovery record is proof that you were at a place. When you complete a Community Discovery Candidate we store the latitude and longitude of that visit. When you unlock a Heritage Card we store the coordinates at which it was discovered. Completed official discoveries store the accuracy and distance measurements of your arrival, not raw coordinates.

If you send us an arrival issue report and explicitly consent to attach diagnostics, that report may include location diagnostics you approved.

We do not build a continuous location history, we never use background location, and we do not track you when the app is not open and being used for exploration. Nearby notifications are therefore only raised while Bible Quest is running.

05

How Location Is Used

  • Showing nearby discoveries and Community Discovery Candidates on your map.
  • Raising a nearby-discovery notification while you are exploring, if you have that notification turned on.
  • Providing walking navigation and route guidance.
  • Detecting arrival at a discovery so rewards can be granted fairly.
  • Preventing duplicate or invalid reward claims.
06

Steps and Walking Distance

Step tracking is off until you turn it on yourself, and we never ask for motion access when you first open the app. If you decline, Bible Quest works exactly as before.

When step tracking is on, we read your device's motion sensor — or, on a device with a true pedometer, its step count — entirely on your device to count steps as you walk. Where the platform can only provide raw motion, the number is an estimate and is always labelled as one.

Walking distance is calculated on your device from the location stream you have already permitted, using only the movement filters described above.

We store aggregated totals only: your step count and walking distance per calendar day, and the totals derived from them. Raw motion sensor readings, accelerometer streams and the coordinates of your walk are never uploaded or stored.

Daily totals are kept with your account so your milestones and achievements survive a new device, and they are deleted with your account. Your step history is private and is never shown to other explorers or on your public Community profile unless you choose to share it.

07

Journey and Discovery Progress

Your completed discoveries, journey progress, XP transactions, achievements, Heritage Cards, artifacts, reflections, saved verses and saved explorations are stored with your account so your progress follows you across devices.

08

Community Content

Posts, comments, reactions, follows, group memberships, notifications and reports you create are stored with your account. Visibility depends on the settings you choose for your Community profile and for each post.

Reports you submit about other explorers are kept for moderation purposes; see Data Retention.

09

Notifications

Notifications are stored with your account so you can read them in the app. If you turn on push notifications for a device, we store the anonymous delivery address your browser issues for that device, together with its encryption keys and a friendly device label such as 'iPhone or iPad'. That address identifies the browser, not you, and cannot be used to locate you.

We keep a small delivery record for each notification so the same message is never sent twice. Turning notifications off for a device, or signing out on it, removes that device's registration immediately, and delivery addresses that your browser has retired are deleted automatically.

10

Photos and Profile Information

If you upload a profile photo it is cropped and re-encoded on your device before upload, which removes embedded metadata such as camera GPS tags. Photos are stored in a private storage bucket and shown through signed links.

11

Device and Technical Information

Our infrastructure processes standard technical information such as IP address, device and browser type and request timestamps in order to serve requests, keep sessions secure and prevent abuse. Some preferences (theme, sound, music, units, map settings) are stored only in your browser's local storage.

12

How We Use Information

  • To operate the exploration, navigation and reward experience.
  • To keep your progress and collections synchronised.
  • To power Community features you choose to use.
  • To protect the integrity of rewards and prevent abuse.
  • To respond to your support, safety or accuracy reports.
13

How Information Is Stored

Data is stored in a managed PostgreSQL database with row-level security, so records tied to your account can only be read or changed by you or by privileged server-side operations. Traffic is encrypted in transit. Profile photos are stored in a private bucket.

14

Third-Party Services

  • Mapbox — map rendering, search and pedestrian routing.
  • OpenStreetMap contributors — place data used to build discoveries.
  • Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons — historical context and imagery.
  • Supabase — database, authentication and storage infrastructure.
15

Map and Location Providers

To draw the map and calculate walking routes, coordinates are sent to our map provider as part of normal map and routing requests. Those providers process the requests under their own privacy terms. We do not send them your account identity.

16

Authentication Providers

Bible Quest accounts use email and password authentication provided by Supabase Auth. Passwords are hashed by the provider and are never accessible to us in readable form.

17

Data Retention

We keep your account information and progress for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your personal records are deleted immediately, as described in the next section.

A small number of records are kept in anonymised form because they are no longer about you: arrival accuracy reports, moderation reports and decisions, group records you created, and editorial attribution on curated discovery data. In each case your identifier is cleared so the record can no longer be linked to you.

18

Account Deletion

You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete account. No email or support request is required.

Deleting your account permanently removes your explorer profile, public Community profile, journey progress, completed discoveries, XP transactions, achievements, Heritage Cards, artifacts, reflections, saved verses, saved explorations, Community posts, comments, reactions, follow relationships, group memberships, notifications, blocks, candidate visit records and uploaded profile photos. Deletion cannot be undone.

19

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or erase your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can correct most information directly in the app, and erase everything through account deletion. For anything else, contact us using the address below.

20

Children's Privacy

Bible Quest is not directed at children under 13, and Bible Quest involves walking in the real world. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

21

Security

We use row-level security, encrypted transport, private storage and server-side authorisation for privileged operations. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password and sign out on shared devices.

22

International Data Processing

Our infrastructure and third-party providers may process and store information in countries other than your own. Where required, transfers rely on appropriate safeguards offered by those providers.

23

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as Bible Quest evolves. The date at the top of this page always reflects the current version, and material changes will be highlighted in the app.
